Needtobreathe, please quit teasing me. I’ve had two songs keep popping in my head over the past few days, and I always think, “Hey, this is an awesome song!” Then I realize that neither one has been recorded. So I’m stuck with what little bits of them I have in my head.

The first is Said Too Much, a new one by Needtobreathe. This is such a well structured song and is the one I’m most looking forward to the from their new album. Here’s a little preview:

The other will, sadly, probably never be recorded. It is their amazing blending of (what I think is) Weezer’s Only In Dreams into We Could Run Away. It adds such an ethereal feel to the song that makes the song approximately 65% better. Seeing as how Needtobreathe has never recorded a cover song, though, this one will probably never make it to a CD. There’s not even a good youtube video of it.

So… The needtobreathe concert last night was basically what I’ve been eagerly waiting for since I first saw them 2 years ago. They were simply awe inspiring. They played no fewer than 3 new songs slated to be on their next record, one I already have from a pre-release special needtobreathe had a while back, and all of them were great. I kind of wish their next album would be a live album, though. I’m afraid their new CD may be a slight let down after hearing so many of the new songs live, but I’m still excited about it either way. The opening acts for the night, Matthew Mayfield and Andy Davis, were both solid as well.

Perhaps the funniest part of the night was that we spent the majority of the time tracking down one of the roadies for the band, instead of the band itself. The guy I went to the concert was on summer project with said roadie in Costa Rica for this past summer, and so this concert was largely a reunion for the two of them.

I also got talked into going to DCF this morning instead of Crosspoint. I had told a lot of people that I would visit DCF soon, and they held me to it. It wasn’t quite what I expected and it was really good. I always like seeing new styles of church and worship. The only downside is that I now have to catch up on Crosspoint’s John series online. Something I’ll have to do again when I go visit North Point Community Church later this month.

  1. 1) They sound incredible live.
Where many bands falter, needtobreathe shines by sounding better live than they do on their records. They are great at adding to and remixing their songs so that you never can hear the same song done the same way twice at any show. Guaranteed… well, they don’t guarantee it, but still.
  2. 2) Their Lyrics are Magical
Everything they write is well thought out and is an art in and of itself. Read them sometime. Not only that, but they churn out new material constantly. Not an easy task, I assure you.
  3. 3) They’re Local
Not much to add here, except: who can’t love a band that comes from Possum Kingdom, SC!
